Status:
Open
Acted as Adoption Agency:
Yes
Notes:
The Salvation Army arranged some adoptions from 1882 but by 1958 had arranged no more than 1,000 or so. However, 40,000+ unmarried women gave birth in various Salvation Army homes and hospitals in the century starting c.1884. In these cases Salvation Army records may provide useful information (possibly including the identity of the adoption society concerned). However in cases in which the Salvation Army provided pastoral or other support, the Salvation Army do not usually hold any records. The Salvation Army say it is rare for such an enquiry to reveal a truly 'Salvation Army adoption', but will investigate all enquiries from both angles.
